Understanding Marla and Kanal plot sizes
Marla and Kanal are units of area, and their square-foot values can differ between housing schemes. Here is why exact dimensions matter more.

In Pakistan, residential plots are commonly described in Marla and Kanal. One Kanal is 20 Marla. What is less obvious is that the square-foot value of a Marla is not the same everywhere.
Why the numbers vary
Different authorities and housing schemes use different conversions. As a result, a "10 Marla" plot can range in area, and its width and depth can vary widely.
Why dimensions matter more than labels
A house plan is designed for a specific width and depth. Two plots with the same Marla value but different proportions need different layouts — a narrow, deep plot handles light and circulation very differently from a wider one.
What to do
Check your allotment letter or site plan for the exact dimensions and any setbacks required by your scheme. Then search plans by those exact dimensions, and confirm setbacks and byelaws with your local authority before construction.
